How to Play Castling

Castling is a free online chess game with a royal-court aesthetic — burgundy and gold squares framed in brushed brass, with candlelit corners and ornate piece glyphs. Click or tap a piece of your color to see its legal moves highlighted, then click a destination to make the move. All standard chess rules are enforced: castling kingside and queenside, en passant, pawn promotion, fivefold repetition draws (a third repetition just flashes a warning), the 50-move rule, stalemate, and checkmate detection. When you capture an enemy piece, a brief battle animation plays on the destination square — the board gives way to a short 3D arena where the two pieces face off, tappable to skip; on reduced-motion settings or devices without WebGL a compact on-square spark effect plays instead.

Tips & Strategy

• Control the center. Pawns on e4, d4, e5, or d5 give your knights and bishops more reach than pawns on the wings.
• Castle early. Get your king behind a pawn shield in the first 10 moves — kings stuck in the center lose to tactical attacks.
• Develop knights before bishops. Knights have fewer good squares; commit them first, then place bishops where they can pressure the center or your opponent's castled king.
• Watch for forks. Knights and queens can attack two pieces at once; if you can fork a king and rook with a knight, you win material.
• Beware the back rank. A castled king with no escape square in front loses to a rook or queen sliding to the back rank — push an h-pawn or g-pawn to make a "luft" escape.
• Use the threat lens. Turning on the threat-lens toggle highlights every piece currently under attack — invaluable while you're still building chess intuition.
