How to Play Dominoes

Dominoes is a classic tile-placement game played with a double-six set of 28 tiles. Each tile shows two pip values divided by a centre line — your goal is to extend a chain of tiles by matching the pip values at either open end. You and the AI opponent each draw seven tiles from the shuffled set; the remaining tiles form the boneyard.

Tap a tile in your hand to select it. If it matches only one chain end, it places automatically. If it fits both ends, tap the left or right half of the board canvas to choose. When you have no playable tile, tap Draw Tile to pull one from the boneyard. If the boneyard is also empty, tap Pass Turn.

The first player to empty their hand wins the hand and scores the total pips remaining in the opponent's hand. If both players are blocked with no boneyard left, the player holding the lower pip total wins. First to the match target (50, 100, or 200 points) wins the match.

Strategy Tips

• Hold your doubles. Doubles can only be played on one specific end value — save them until that end is open rather than burning them early and narrowing your own future options.
• Count pips, not just tiles. A hand of seven low-pip tiles (total 5) beats a hand of three tiles if the total (say 14) is higher. When both players are near-blocked, pip total matters as much as hand size.
• Control the chain ends. On Medium and Hard, the AI actively minimises your valid plays. Try to keep both chain ends at pip values you hold duplicates of — it gives you more options and limits the AI's scoring.
• Draw deliberately. Every boneyard draw shrinks the pool. If you are close to blocking the AI, drawing one extra tile may be worth it to land a blocking tile.

Tile games with pip pairs appear in Chinese written records from around the Yuan dynasty, and the European double-six set most players know today spread through Italy and France in the 18th century before crossing to Britain and the Americas. The draw variant played here — match an open end, draw from the boneyard when stuck, score the loser's remaining pips — became the standard social form in pubs and family parlors, and it translates almost perfectly to a browser: the boneyard is shuffled honestly, the AI never peeks, and the pip math is scored for you.
