How to Play Hook

Hook is a relaxing fishing simulation game built around a satisfying cast-and-reel loop. Press Cast Line to send your line into the water. The depth indicator on the left shows how deep your line goes — deeper water means rarer fish but stiffer resistance.

Once the line is in the water, wait for a bite. The bobber will flash yellow and the button changes to REEL! — click it within two seconds or the fish escapes. Then comes the reel minigame: a blue needle drifts under fish pressure. Click rapidly to push the needle back into the green zone. Keep it there to fill your reel health bar. Full health = caught fish. Empty health = the one that got away.

Every catch reveals the species name, rarity, and weight in grams. Heavier fish score higher on the global leaderboard. New species flash a "New species!" banner and are saved to your local gallery. The gallery tracks all 40 species from Common to Legendary.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I catch a fish in Hook?
Press Cast to send your line into the water. Wait for the bobber to flash yellow — that is the bite signal. Click Reel within 2 seconds to start the reel minigame. Keep the blue needle inside the green zone by clicking or tapping rapidly. If your reel health reaches 100 the fish is caught; if it drops to 0 the fish escapes.
How does depth affect which fish appear?
Hook uses a 0-5 depth scale that increases automatically after every 5 catches. Shallow depths (0-1) produce only Common species like Sardines and Bluegill. Deeper levels unlock Uncommon, Rare, and eventually Legendary species such as the Oarfish and Phantom Lanternfish. Rarer fish are always heavier, which means higher leaderboard scores.
What is the fish gallery in Hook?
The gallery tracks which of the 40 species you have landed at least once, stored in your browser's localStorage. Each new species is flagged with a "New species!" banner on the catch reveal screen. Legendary species (ranks 37-40) require deep-water fishing and considerable luck to unlock.
Does Hook work on mobile?
Yes. All game interactions — Cast, Reel, and the reel minigame clicks — respond to touch. The canvas uses touchstart with preventDefault to prevent scroll interference. The reel minigame is designed for rapid tapping, which works naturally on touchscreens.
How is the leaderboard score calculated?
The leaderboard tracks the single heaviest catch weight in grams from your session. Only catches that exceed your previous leaderboard score trigger a submission attempt. Legendary fish can weigh up to 500,000 g, far exceeding any Common or Uncommon species.
