How to Play Driftwood

Driftwood is a daily coastal jigsaw puzzle. Each day a new procedurally-generated scene — misty harbours, rolling dunes, marble tide pools, fog-wrapped sea stacks, breakwaters, and coves — is sliced into 48 pieces (6 columns × 8 rows). Drag pieces from the tray on the left onto the ghost-grid board on the right. Drop a piece on any empty cell and it stays parked there (shown with a dashed outline) — pick it up again, rotate it in place with a double-tap, or slide it around while you work out the scene. A piece locks in with a chime when placed in its correct cell at 0° rotation.

Right-click or press R while holding a piece — or double-tap a piece in the tray on touch devices — to rotate it 90° clockwise. Each piece requires 0° (no rotation) to lock; if you drop a piece on its correct cell at the wrong angle, the cell flashes amber with a rotate reminder. Daily mode produces the same scene for all players sharing the same UTC date; Infinite mode generates a fresh random scene every play.

Strategy Tips

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the hint system work in Driftwood?
Pressing the Hint button selects a random unplaced piece, outlines that piece in gold in the tray, and highlights its correct board cell with a matching gold outline for 3 seconds — so you know exactly which piece goes where. Each hint deducts 200 points from your score. You have a maximum of 3 hints per puzzle — use them when you've exhausted all visible matches in a region.
When does the daily puzzle reset in Driftwood?
The daily puzzle resets at midnight UTC. The seed is derived from the UTC date (year, month, day combined), so all players worldwide see the same scene on the same UTC date. If you've already solved today's puzzle, the game shows an "Already Solved" screen; tap Play Infinite to keep playing with random scenes.
How does piece rotation work in Driftwood?
Each piece starts shuffled with a random rotation — 0°, 90°, 180°, or 270°. While dragging a piece, right-click (desktop) or press the R key to rotate it 90° clockwise; on touch devices, double-tap a piece (in the tray or parked on the board) to rotate it in place. A piece only locks into a board cell when it's in the correct position AND at 0° rotation. Dropping a piece on its correct cell at the wrong angle parks it there and flashes the cell amber with a rotate reminder — double-tap or re-drop it at 0° to lock it in.
Can I place pieces anywhere on the board in Driftwood?
Yes — drop a piece on any empty board cell and it parks there with a dashed outline, staying movable. Park pieces near where you think they belong, group sky and water regions, and rearrange freely as the scene takes shape. Only a piece on its correct cell at 0° rotation locks in permanently (solid, no outline, with a chime). Dropping onto an occupied cell flashes red and returns the piece to the tray.
How is the score calculated in Driftwood?
Your score starts at 10,000. It decreases by 5 for every second elapsed and by 200 for each hint used (max 3). The formula is Score = max(0, 10000 − seconds × 5 − hints × 200). Completing the puzzle quickly and without hints gives the highest possible score for daily leaderboard rankings.
What coastal scene templates appear in Driftwood?
Eight scene templates rotate on an 8-day cycle: Harbour (stone pier with lighthouse stub), Dunes (rolling sand dunes with organic coastline), Tide Pool (marble-rock foreground with oval pools), Sea Stack (twin fog-wrapped rock pillars), Breakwater (concrete barrier with spray), Cove (curved sandy bay with cliffside palm), Coral Reef (underwater glow with branching coral and light shafts), and Lighthouse Cliffs (dramatic cliff face with a white lighthouse and sweeping beam). Each template pairs with one of four mood palettes — Sunrise, Overcast, Dusk, or Golden Hour — for 32 total visual combinations.
