The rules are the same as classic tic tac toe: players take turns placing their mark on the grid, and the first to form an unbroken line — horizontal, vertical, or diagonal — wins. A full board with no winner is a draw.
- Single player: Click or tap a cell to place your mark. The AI responds immediately.
- Multiplayer: Players take turns on the same device — pass it between turns or play at the same keyboard.
Game Modes
Play against three difficulty levels — Easy, Medium, or Hard — on any board size
Two players on the same device, each with a unique neon color and symbol
Three players take turns in order — works best on 4×4 or 5×5 boards where there's room to play
Enter any board size for an oversized match — gives three-player games more room to develop
AI Difficulty Levels
Three AI settings cover a wide range of players:
- Easy — plays randomly. Good for introducing young children to the game, or as a warmup.
- Medium — blocks your winning moves and pursues its own lines. Will beat inattentive players but can be outmaneuvered.
- Hard — uses enhanced strategic evaluation, especially on larger boards. Genuinely difficult to beat on a 4×4 or 5×5 where the move space is wider.
On the standard 3×3 grid, a perfect player can always force at least a draw against any opponent. The Hard AI approaches this on the 3×3. On larger boards, perfect play becomes computationally impractical, which is where the strategic depth opens up for experienced players.
Board Sizes and Why They Matter
The classic game on a 3×3 grid has limited depth — experienced players will often draw every match against each other. The larger boards are where the game gets interesting:
- 3×3: Classic. Fast. Nine cells, best of 5 matches for a session.
- 4×4: More paths to victory. Strategy begins to resemble connect-four thinking — forcing your opponent to block in one place while you build elsewhere.
- 5×5: The most strategic option. With 25 cells and multiple possible winning lines, games develop over many turns. Particularly well-suited for three-player matches.
- Custom: Set any size for oversized or experimental games.
Three-Player Mode
Three-player tic tac toe changes the game's fundamental dynamics. In a two-player game, you can track one opponent. In a three-player game, you have to simultaneously block two opponents while building your own line — and the player who wins is often not the one who was "ahead" mid-game but the one who capitalized while the other two blocked each other.
Each player gets a distinct neon color and unique symbol. On larger boards, three-player games develop more fully before the grid fills, giving each player enough room to pursue genuine strategies rather than just reacting.
Works on Mobile
The game is touch-friendly — tap a cell to place your mark, no drag or precision input required. The grid scales to fit any screen size. Local multiplayer on mobile works the same as desktop — pass the device between players for head-to-head matches without needing any internet connection.
